Kushida Shrine
Hakata Ward, Fukuoka
4.3★★★★★★★★★★14K reviews
The guardian shrine of Hakata's old merchant quarter, at the heart of the city's festival life. Inside its grounds stands one of the giant decorated floats of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, on display most of the year. Its ginkgo tree, its well and the merchant streets around it make it a calm stop between Canal City and Nakasu.
Good to know
- Tradition dates its founding to 757.
- The Yamakasa festival ends in the early hours of 15 July with teams racing floats through the streets.
- Its sacred ginkgo is said to be more than 1,000 years old.
