Osaka Castle
Chuo Ward, Nara
Toyotomi Hideyoshi built the original castle in 1583 as the seat of the man who unified Japan. The white-and-gold keep you see today is a 1931 reconstruction in concrete, housing a museum of his life, and the real treasure is the scale of the grounds: huge stone walls, wide moats and a park that turns pink with plum and cherry blossom in spring.
Good to know
- Some of the stones in its walls weigh more than 100 tonnes.
- The castle fell in the siege of 1615, which ended the Toyotomi line.
- The observation floor of the keep looks over the whole of central Osaka.
