Nagoya Castle
Naka Ward, Seto
Built for the Tokugawa clan in the early 17th century, Nagoya Castle is crowned by two golden shachihoko — mythical tiger-headed fish believed to protect against fire. The main keep has been closed for a planned wooden reconstruction, but the Hommaru Palace beside it, painstakingly rebuilt with traditional methods, is the highlight: room after room of gold-leaf painted screens.
Good to know
- Construction began in 1610 on the orders of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
- Most of the castle was destroyed in air raids in 1945; the palace reopened in full in 2018.
- The grounds are one of Nagoya's favourite cherry-blossom spots.
