How we rank

Most reviewed is not the same as best. A landmark with 200,000 reviews is famous, busy and easy to find, but that doesn't make it a better visit than a small café with 900 reviews and a 4.8. So we show both numbers: the review count tells you how many people went and bothered to write, the rating tells you how they felt.

Our default "Best" order uses a Bayesian score. Every place starts from a neutral 4.0 that counts as if it had 300 reviews, and its own reviews pull it up or down from there. A 4.8 with 320 reviews ends near 4.41; a 4.8 with 4,600 reviews keeps about 4.75. A perfect score from a dozen people can't beat a 4.6 from thousands. A small boost for reach and for a steady flow of new reviews keeps the list current.

The data has limits, and they matter. For each city we keep up to 20 places per category, the ones Google returns for that search, so this is not a census of every place on Earth: a famous spot can be missing simply because it sits outside the cities we track. Right now that means 8,544 places in 80 cities, with 49.2 million reviews between them and 77 places past 100,000 reviews. Each city is refreshed every 8 weeks, and no place pays to be listed or to move up.

How are places ranked?

With a Bayesian score that weighs each rating by how many reviews back it, plus a small boost for steady new reviews, so a 5.0 from 12 people can't outrank a 4.6 from thousands. Any city can also be sorted by most reviewed, highest rated, trending or hidden gems.
